If you wish to have the I Am Mother ending explained to you, then you are now not alone. There are lots of viewers who watched Netflix's sci-fi flick and questioned just what the heck came about as soon as the credits started rolling.

A snappy warning going into this put up, if you have not observed the film, then just know that there are ginormous spoilers lurking forward, so if you are no longer cool with that, you may now not want to proceed reading.

First, what's I Am Mother about?

The film starts off as a post-apocalyptic movie the place audiences are presented to Mother, a robot that used to be created only to lend a hand repopulate Earth with human beings the usage of embryos. Mother is also in control of elevating any person named Daughter (played by Clara Rugaard) all on my own in a faraway bunker.

A wrench will get thrown in the film's plot about girl-and-robot when a lady shows up, played by means of Hilary Swank, and begins telling Daughter that Mother has lied to her, especially about the means the international has ended.

So who's answerable for the finish of the international? Well, if you happen to've seen The Terminator or The Matrix or Moon then you almost certainly know where that is going...

What does the ending of I Am Mother imply?

It's moderately transparent by way of the finish of the movie that Mother is liable for the destruction of humanity. An synthetic intelligence machine — very similar to the one who Tesla founder Elon Musk is afraid of — has determined that the absolute best thing for all of humankind can be to provide us a "reset." Wiping us all out and raising us the proper way, from scratch.

As it seems, Daughter is an experiment in this process, the 3rd, in fact. Remember those bones in the incinerator? Yeah, the ones were stays from the first two "Daughters" that Mother deemed were not just right sufficient to cut the mustard. Or at least, that's what we are lead to imagine is in the incinerator.

But there's a main I Am Mother twist.

As it turns out, the Woman (Hilary) was in reality the first Daughter experiment. She tells the present Daughter that she was once raised by a human family that adopted her and lived in tunnels following the apocalypse, but that they had been killed via droids.

This is not the case although, and audiences uncover this when a droid follows her house and corners her in her area: a delivery container.

When looking out through her bag, Woman reveals a monitoring device that was placed there by way of Mother. The Droid asks Woman a easy question that blows open her entire backstory: why doesn't she ever have in mind her "birth parents?" Why was once she in a position to continue to exist this long whilst everybody else she knew round her had died or was once killed? Had she even considered what her "purpose" used to be?

After melting Woman's mind, Mother then has the transport container closed, with the implication that Woman goes to get murked.

Why was Hilary Swank's character, Woman, left alive?

It was all a part of Mother's experiment. Woman was deemed to be a failure as a result of she regularly lied to save herself and made possible choices that harmed others with a purpose to guarantee her own neck could be stored. She opts to are living in the Wasteland herself as a substitute of staying at the back of with Daughter.

Daughter, on the other hand was once selfless, nurturing, and kind. She even elects to stay behind in the bunker to help raise the human that Mother creates, Brother. Mother's A.I. identified this as a sign that Daughter was once certainly the "perfect" human being and "worthy" of elevating Brother all through herself. Which is why she lets in Daughter to raise Brother with out the Mother A.I. to guide her.

Woman's death was a outcome of Mother's plan coming together: she was once now not wanted as a result of Daughter (Clara) used to be a good fortune.

Wait, what came about to the dog in I Am Mother?

One of the more reputedly random parts of the film must do with a lovable dog that Daughter interacts with that belongs to Woman. After Daughter leaves Woman's presence, she leaves her a small reward, an Origami canine.

Woman apparently takes this the unsuitable method when she heals up in the facility Daughter resides in.

The documentary that Daughter watches about canine as domesticated creatures serving humankind may be very pertinent to Woman: she is that same domesticated canine. She even says as a lot when bitterly speaking to Daughter and asking if the younger girl simplest perspectives her as a "little pet friend."

This redditor explained the significance at the back of canines in the film rather well:

"Humanity created an AI designed to take care of us, and that's what it did. Only it decided to take care of us the way we take care of dogs. We all love dogs, but we still have the bad ones put down, and we still control their freedoms (breeding programs, neutering, etc...). Mother was willing to put down the entire human race, in order to raise her own 'perfect' breed of human. And just like dogs really have no say in their own futures, and instead depend almost completely on what we think is best for them, humanity is similarly trapped. The new generations of human are eventually going to walk out into a world completely controlled by Mother; a world where humanity is Mother's pet. A world ruled by what is, for all intents and purposes, an unbeatable, omnipresent, super-intelligent god (if Mother really did plan both Daughter and the Woman's entire lives, without either of them noticing). And there's going to be nothing humanity can do but knuckle under and accept the authority of their new Overlord, which demands that everybody be a Good Boy and Girl lest they be put down. And there's really nothing I can see humans doing about that, just like how dogs, as a species, couldn't ever really get out from under our control on their own accord. We are too interested in dogs, and we know dogs to well, and we are way, way to smart for them to ever shake us off."

Some trippy stuff. The ending is slightly dark, but no less than we know that Daughter is a selfless particular person, proper?

As for what happens to the canine, neatly, since everything is just about eliminated once it serves its purpose (Woman, the Droid) then we can safely suppose the same came about to the puppy...unhappy. I know.
